Dr Imran Niazi is a biomedical engineer and neuroscientist with over 15 years of international research and leadership experience across Pakistan, Europe, North America, and New Zealand. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Science and Engineering from Aalborg University (Denmark), an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Lübeck (Germany), and a BSc in Electrical Engineering from Riphah International University (Pakistan).
He has held academic and research appointments at Aalborg University (Denmark), Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand), Ontario Tech University (Canada), and University of Hertfordshire (UK), where he also holds adjunct and professorial positions. Recognised internationally in brain–computer interface (BCI) research, he has helped establish the New Zealand College of Chiropractic as a global leader in neuroscience and rehabilitation innovation.
In his current role, Dr Niazi leads a multidisciplinary research and innovation team spanning neuroscience, biomechanics, physiotherapy, chiropractic, engineering, and data science. His research focuses on two complementary areas of rehabilitation — technological innovation (BCI systems, wearable sensors, and AI-enabled tools) and conservative treatment approaches (chiropractic and manual therapies that enhance neuroplastic recovery). He has authored over 300 scholarly works, including journal papers, Conference proceedings and abstracts.
As team lead at Nortek Labs Ltd, Dr Niazi oversees the development of advanced brain scanners and biosignal amplifiers used internationally in neurophysiology and rehabilitation research. Through Vitality Innovation, NZCC’s technology-transfer office, he supports the translation of research into clinical and commercial applications.
Dr Niazi demonstrates a transformational and participative leadership style, combining strategic vision with a collaborative approach. He fosters innovation through multidisciplinary teamwork, empowering researchers, clinicians, and engineers to contribute their expertise while maintaining a strong focus on mentorship, integrity, and measurable outcomes. His leadership connects scientific excellence with practical innovation, guiding teams to translate ideas into real-world healthcare and societal impact.
Within PDCNZ, Dr Niazi aims to strengthen research integrity, mentorship, and innovation culture, supporting emerging academics and clinicians to develop multidisciplinary expertise and pursue entrepreneurial pathways that transform research into tangible benefits for health and society.
